Arrive in San Jose and enjoy a day exploring the city. The main plaza often has a bustling and lively crowd, or visit one of the many museums or markets for authentic souvenirs. San Jose is a beautiful city, however its climate is very humid, and it will take time to adjust to the heat, so make sure to drink plenty of bottled water, and refrain from attempting too much during the first few days. On day two, volunteers will make their way to Playa Matapalo, a small village on the Pacific coast. Spend five days here, working alongside local and international volunteers, protecting Sea Turtles. Patrol the beaches at night to protect nests and, during the day, help keep the beaches clean and free of any debris that could be harmful to newly hatched turtles. Once hatched, monitor the turtle hatchery by counting the turtles before releasing them into the ocean. When time here is finished, the next stop is Monteverde and the Forest Reserve, where nature activities are abundant, and there’s even an opportunity to zipline through the forest canopy. The last stop, before heading back to San Jose for departure, is in La Fortuna, a town at the base of the Arenal Volcano. Take a night hike around the volcano base, swim under the La Fortuna waterfall, relax in the hot springs, and maybe even see a monkey or two! This 15-day trip starts at $1,099 per person.
